Electric Shocks
Cuts
and abrasionSuppose a sibling of yours
is ironing his uniform for school. All
of a sudden you hear a scream. You rush
forward to see what has happened to him/her.
He/she is turned blue as there is a short-circuiting
in the wire of the iron and the wire is
attached to his/her hand. This type of
situation is called Electric shock, which
happens due to a reflex response to the
passage of electric current through the
body.
What you should do:
- First
of all try to remove the victim from the
source of electricity before touching
him. This can be done either by turning
off the master switch to disconnect the
power, or by using a nonmetal, dry object
such as a stick to pull the wire or electrical
source away from the victim's body.
- If
he is not breathing, start giving him
rescue breathing immediately. Rescue breathing
should be given after making sure that
the patient is not breathing. The details
for rescue breathing are given in the
next topic of Asphyxiation.
- If
the person is unconscious, but is breathing
and has a heartbeat, you should place
him in the recovery position and monitor
his breathing and heart rate until medical
help arrives.
