Measurements.

For grade 8:

Length.
Length is the measurement of things in one dimension. The unit of length is meter. The meter also has other equivalants.
They are:
1 millimeter = 1mm = 0.001 meter
1 centimeter = 1cm = 0.01 meter
1 decimeter = 1dm = 0.1 meter
1 kilometer = 1 km = 1000 meters

Area:
The region occupied by a shape or body is known as area. This area is taken in two dimensions. The unit of area is meter square. The other equivalents are:
1 millimeter = 1mm
1 centimeter = 1cm
1 decimeter = 1dm
1 kilometer = 1 km

Volume:
Volume is the space occupied by a body or shape. The volume is in three dimensions. The standard unit of volume is liter. Other equivalents are;
1 milliliter = 1 ml = 0.001 liter
1 centiliter = 1cl = 0.01 liter
1 deciliter = 1dl = 0.1 liter
1 kiloliter = 1kl = 1000 liters

Mass:
The amount of mater in a body is called its mass. The unit of mass in metric system is gram. And other equivalent units are:
1 milligram = 1 mg = 0.001 gram
1 centigram = 1 cg = 0.01 gram
1 decigram = 1 dg = 0.1 gram
1 kilogram = 1 kg = 1000 grams

Time:
The time has following conversions which are useful in our daily life.
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 60 minutes = 3600 seconds
1 day = 24 hours = 1440 minutes
1 week = 7 days = 168 hours
1 year = 365 1/4 days

Prefix for decimal measurements:

      Prefix Meaning
       milli - 0.001
       centi - 0.01
       deci - 0.1
       deka - 10
       hecto - 100
       kilo - 1000

Examples:
1. The length of a pencil is about 10cm long.
2. The area of your study table top is about 864 cm sq.
3. The volume of a liter carbonated water can is 1 liter.
4. The mass of paper clip is about 1 gram.
5. The time required to clap is about 3 seconds.
